To celebrate two amazingly well-rounded students, Principal Greg Gotchey gathered the entire Chaparral staff in the library. He first addressed to everyone that this is the first time in Chaparral history that the school has been given an International Diploma from the AP College Board. In order to do this, one must earn a 3 or higher on at least 5 Advanced Placement (AP) course tests. The courses that are needed to be eligible for this prestigious award must include at least one world language, an English, a math or science, and a global awareness class, such as economics. These students, Olenka Burghardt and Landon Yanez received the award at the end of their Junior year, a year earlier than most students. Olenka, recalling what it felt like when she was informed of her award, was so surprised and said she “was not expecting it at all.” She worked so hard in all of her classes because she was interested in the subjects and “took the classes [she] liked and just happened to qualify for this.” Both Olenka and Landon have been recognized as two of Chaparral’s hardest working students by receiving this award. Principal Gotchey even told the staff that Chaparral might have an opportunity for another award at the end of the year.
