On January 16th, the Chaparral Boys Varsity Basketball team had an away game against the Hinkley Thunderbirds. The team has been working hard to improve, after their rough start to the season. The Wolverines struggled to get ahead in the first quarter, and ended up down 7-16. In the second quarter, the team fought back, bringing the score to 22-28 at halftime. After the second quarter, and still down by 6 Chaparral toiled their way ahead their strengths and rhythm to make the score 39-34, Wolverine ahead. After they gained the lead, the team took off to score 21 points in the 4th quarter, and finish the game off with a final score of 60-47-- a Wolverine victory.

After the past few weeks of non-conference games, the question has been asked if non-conference games are really even helpful to win. The team's record with the opposing schools in their league are what effect seeding and qualifications for State, non-conference games do not affect those. Senior Spencer Sheaman said, “It’s really important because we’re in the toughest conference in the state so it’s important we get wins now because it’s good practice and when conference play starts, games are going to become harder to win.” The team is working hard to improve their non-conference play in order to prepare for the upcoming league games.
