From home football games, to track events, to yearly graduation, Sports Authority Stadium has been a true home and reflection of all Chaparral stands for. Very recently, the home turf has undergone a unique change- it will now be known as “EchoPark Stadium."
EchoPark Automotive is a well-known used car dealership with chain locations popular throughout the Denver Metro area, also spanning as far as Thornton. Given the close proximity to the Stadium, the name change was viewed as being a relatively easy yet necessary choice. “Once Sports Authority went out of business, the district went looking for bids on the new naming of the stadium,” said Chaparral Athletic Director Rob Johnson. “EchoPark Automotive won the bid by simply offering more money than the other bidders.”
The change was necessary after Sports Authority, previously a very successful business, declared bankruptcy in late May. Previous Sports Authority Representative Adam Duff believes the effects of this are more long-term than we all realize. “Changing the name requires a lot of behind the scenes work that simply changing the sign doesn’t encompass. When something like this happens, it has a large ripple effect. Entire jobs change, because of a new management exchange. It’s more profound than high school student can wrap their minds around.” Construction is currently going on to change the signs, but the work goes far deeper.
On top of this, there are some other changes taking place at this stadium. Tickets sold directly at games are now $4 dollars, whereas tickets sold last year were only $3. In addition, activity cards (attached to student’s ID in order to enter all athletic events for free) are now $40, a 15 dollar increase from last year.
Meanwhile, most Chaparral students acknowledge the necessity and even welcome the change. This field is still Chaparral’s pride and stomping grounds, in addition to other DCSD schools.
